7 Sunday Routines That Make the Week Run Smoother

This one's worth a share 👇

We’ve all had those Sundays. The ones that start off slow, and then out of nowhere, you’re keeping up with laundry, hunting down missing lunch boxes, and realizing your kid has a school project due tomorrow that no one remembered. Somehow, Sundays often feel like an early start to Monday, heavy with all the things we didn’t get to do. It’s as if everything piles up, waiting to be done.

I used to dread Sundays because of that. But over time, I’ve figured out a few things that make a big difference. And I’m not talking about turning into a hyper productive mom. I just mean taking a little bit of time to prepare myself before the week starts. That tiny bit of prep? It goes a long way.

Now, Sundays feel different. Less rushed, a little softer. If I give myself permission to slow down while also doing a few helpful things, the whole week feels more manageable. It’s not about perfection, it’s about easing into Monday, instead of jumping straight into it and feeling overwhelmed.

So, here are 7 Sunday routines that have honestly changed the game for me. They help me stay ahead, feel more balanced, and most importantly, actually enjoy the weekend a little more.

1. Kick Off Your Week with Intention

Planning your week doesn’t sound like the most exciting way to spend a Sunday. I used to roll my eyes at it too. But I’ve found that even a few minutes to plan can seriously change the tone of my whole week. It’s not about following a perfect schedule or calendar, it’s about being intentional and finding ways to make your week feel a little less heavy to carry.

Here’s what I do:

  • Pick the best time for you. For me, it’s usually Sunday morning, but honestly, anytime that gives you a moment of quiet will work.
  • Write it down: use a notebook or your phone, it doesn’t need to be fancy. Just something to hold your thoughts.
  • Start with the big stuff. Think about appointments, work meetings, school events, anything with a time attached to it. It helps give your week some structure.
  • Add in family time. It doesn’t have to be big or fancy, maybe a movie night, pancakes on Wednesday. Just something you’re looking forward to together.
  • Don’t forget yourself. Set aside some “ME-time,” even if it’s just 10 minutes while your kid watches Bluey. It counts.
  • Be flexible. Unexpected things happen, and it’s ok to adjust as you go.

Keep in mind that this is about giving yourself time to enjoy the week without stressing out all the time. And when something unexpected happens, having an idea of what’s coming makes it way easier to adjust.

Prepare Meals Ahead of Time

I don’t know about you, but I always thought that meal prep meant spending hours stuck in the kitchen, but I was wrong. Once I started adding it into my Sunday routine, slowly, I realized that prepping a few things ahead of time actually made the whole week feel easier and way less stressful.

The first thing I do when I’m meal prepping is check Pinterest. You’ll find many simple and quick recipes that fit into any schedule.

Here’s how planning your meals can be a bit easier:

  • Look up ideas on Pinterest: you can use Pinterest to find great recipes. Simply type in a few keywords like “easy weeknight dinners,” “batch cooking recipes,” or “make-ahead lunch ideas.”
  • Customize your search: Pinterest is great for narrowing things down. You can search for “healthy meal prep,” “vegetarian batch cooking,” or “low carb dinner ideas.”
  • Use prompts to find quick recipes: Try searching for terms like “15-minute meals,” “freezer-friendly dinners,” or “one-pan dinners” to find recipes that are both time-saving and delicious.
  • Use leftovers to save time: We don’t waste leftovers. I love using them for lunches or even dinner the next day. Often, I’ll freeze a portion to use the following week

2. Set Aside Me-Time

Between the to-do lists, the dishes, the laundry, and just trying to be there for your kids, there’s usually not much left for you. But I’ve learned that even taking a few quiet minutes for myself on Sundays can make a big difference. And no, I’m not talking about a full hour for a skincare routine or some dreamy spa day. For me, it’s often just ten minutes to breathe and reset.

Here’s how I make sure to get some me-time in:

Get Up Early (At least a few minutes)

  • My mornings can be a struggle, but waking up just a bit earlier can give you a few quiet moments before the day starts. Maybe it’s having a quick breakfast while scrolling through Pinterest, or even just sitting still and breathing for a minute.
  • Those 15 minutes can help you set a calm tone for the rest of your Sunday and week.

Go for a Walk or a Quick Drive

  • Sometimes, I like to get out of the house to clear my head. A simple walk or a quick drive by myself can feel so refreshing. It’s an easy way to get a bit of quiet time, especially if you’re someone who can’t sit still.

Take a Long Bath or Shower

  • It might sound clichĂ©, but a long shower can work wonders for my mood. It’s just about creating a space where I can unwind and not think about the next thing on my to-do list.

3. Organize Your Space

Clutter just makes everything feel heavier. But honestly, organizing is usually the last thing I want to do on a Sunday. For a long time, I avoided it because I assumed it would take hours. But once I started tackling little things here and there, just little things here and there each Sunday, it really helped reduce stress during the week.

The week feels less stressful, and my space feels more manageable. It doesn’t have to be anything big. Even 15 or 20 minutes of straightening up can go a long way.

When my space feels even a little bit more put together, my mind does too. I don’t know if it’s the clear counters or just the feeling of crossing something off the list, but taking a few minutes to tidy up has made a huge difference for me. It helps me feel more settled going into the week.

Here are a few simple ways I organize my space on Sundays:

Start with the Main Areas

  • Focus on the areas that get the most use like your kitchen or living room. I always make sure the kitchen counters are clear, the dishes are done, and the table is wiped down.
  • In the living room, I’ll quickly fluff the pillows and fold the blankets that always seem to end up all over the place.

Tidy the Entryway

  • You’ll probably agree with me, but the entryway always seems to get cluttered with shoes, bags, and coats. Taking a couple of minutes to clear and organize this space helps me feel more organized when I walk through the door.

Do a Quick Declutter in One Room

  • I like to pick one room to quickly declutter. I just grab a bag or bin and toss in anything that’s out of place. You don’t need to organize everything, just clear off the surfaces and get rid of things that don’t belong. (I’ll deal with that later)
  • It’s surprisingly satisfying, and it makes the whole house feel a little more put together.

4. Prepare for the Morning Rush

If you’re like me, mornings can feel a little all over the place. Between getting yourself ready, and making sure everyone has what they need, it’s easy to feel like you’re starting the day already behind. That’s why I’ve found that prepping a few things the night before, especially on Sundays. It really helps set a smoother tone for the week.

And it doesn’t have to turn into some big nighttime project. Just a few things can take a lot of pressure off those busy mornings and help the day start off on a much smoother note.

Here are a couple things I do to prepare for the morning rush:

Lay Out Clothes the Night Before

  • I’m a big fan of picking out clothes the night before. It’s one less thing to think about in the morning, and I’m not running around looking for matching socks or a shirt that’s “just right.”
  • I even lay out my kids’ clothes and get their school bags ready. It’s a small step, but it takes away so much stress when we’re trying to get out the door on time.

Pack Lunches in Advance

  • Making lunches the night before has been a lifesaver. I’ll assemble sandwiches, snacks, and any leftovers I want to send with the kids. I also love prepping breakfast items, sometimes it’s overnight oats, or I’ll set out smoothie ingredients so all I have to do is blend them in the morning.
  • Having lunches ready to go means I can focus on other things instead of stressing over what to make when everyone’s already hungry.

The biggest takeaway here is that getting organized the night before can make mornings feel a lot less stressful. Just a few minutes of prep work on Sunday can help your entire family start the week on a smoother note. You’ll be surprised at how much time and mental energy it saves during those busy mornings.

5. Make Space for What Matters

To me, one of the most important things I’ve learned over time is that balance doesn’t just happen. It’s something we need to be intentional about, especially as busy moms. After spending the week in between work, family, and everything in between, Sundays are a perfect time for me to reflect on how I’m prioritizing what matters most, and how I can make space for more of it in the week ahead.

This isn’t about being hard on myself. It’s about taking a step back to reflect and make intentional decisions for the upcoming week. It’s about asking myself, “What went well last week? Where can I improve? And how can I be more present for my family?”

Here’s how I make this time of reflection and setting priorities work:

Reflect on Your Wins and Challenges

  • First, I like to take a moment to look back on the week. What actually went well? What made me feel good? Maybe I got some real quality time with my daughter, like the kind where I wasn’t half-scrolling on my phone. Or maybe we actually followed through on that date night instead of deciding last minute to just stay in and watch something. Or I finally finished a work project that had been sitting on my plate for way too long. Whatever it is, I try to notice it. The little wins count. And I’ve started celebrating them, even the tiny one
  • Then, I look at what didn’t go so well. Maybe there were moments of frustration, or I didn’t spend as much time with my family as I hoped. Knowing the challenges is important, as it helps me see where I can make changes moving forward.

Be Flexible, But Intentional

  • Things don’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. I’ve learned to be flexible, but I also try to stay intentional about where I spend my time. Maybe a work deadline gets pushed, or a family activity gets swapped for something else.
  • I’ve started being more open to adjusting my plan when something unexpected comes up. It’s about making sure I’m always prioritizing what truly matters in those moments.

6. Setting the Tone for a Balanced Week

Sundays don’t have to be about catching up on everything you didn’t get to during the week. They can be a chance to slow down, reset, and make a little space for what actually matters, whether that’s getting ahead on a few things, taking time for yourself, or just enjoying the moments with your family that make life feel full.

I’ve found that adding just a few simple routines into my Sundays makes a big difference. Not because everything magically becomes perfect, but because it helps bring a sense of balance I can carry into the week. It’s not about doing it all. It’s about being intentional with what matters most.

The small things, like prepping a few meals, cleaning up a space that’s been driving you crazy, or just laughing with your kids without looking at your phone, are the things that can shift the tone of your whole week.

So this next Sunday, take a minute to check in with yourself. What do you want to focus on? What would make the week feel lighter, or more meaningful? Set yourself up not just to get through it, but to actually enjoy it.

Before You Go

I hope these simple Sunday routines help you create a more balanced week. Remember, it’s not about doing everything perfectly, but about taking small steps to set yourself up for success. Whether it’s planning your week, carving out time for yourself, or reflecting on what matters most, every little bit counts.
